Why You Should Have An RV Water Softener

As you travel in your RV, water quality can vary significantly based on your location and local water supply. Hard water, caused by high mineral content, leaves residue after evaporation. While safe to drink, it can damage your RV's plumbing and water-using appliances by causing scale buildup in pipes and on surfaces. It also makes laundry less effective and reduces soap lathering. Fortunately, portable RV water softeners can effectively eliminate these minerals.

It's important to note that RV water softeners serve a different purpose than water filters. While filters remove solid particles from water, the minerals responsible for water hardness are typically dissolved and remain present. In the U.S., sunnier regions like the Southwest and Florida tend to have harder water, whereas softer water is more common in New England and the Pacific Northwest. The Great Lakes area also frequently experiences harder water conditions.

An RV water softener operates through ion exchange technology, effectively removing hard water minerals like calcium, magnesium and manganese. As water passes through the resin tank, these minerals are swapped with sodium ions (or potassium chloride if sodium levels need to be limited). The system requires regular regeneration cycles to flush out accumulated minerals and recharge the resin with fresh sodium ions. Over time, both the resin beads and salt/potassium chloride will need replacement to maintain optimal performance.
