Cartridge filters are designed to remove sediment, metals, and microorganisms from water. To ensure optimal performance, it's important to install filters of the correct size and specification. These filters perform most effectively when the incoming water contains low levels of solid particles and chemical contaminants.
What Does Cartridge Filter Remove?
Cartridges are housed within a filtration unit and function to eliminate unwanted contaminants, solid particles, and certain liquid chemicals. For optimal performance, the contaminant level in cartridge filters should remain below 0.01% by weight.
Cartridge filters are capable of capturing particles larger than 5 microns. Many of these filters are manufactured from polypropylene, a material chosen for its resistance to bacterial growth.

How does water flow through Cartridge Filter?
Water filter cartridges can be classified into two main structural types: radial and axial.
Radial cartridges feature a permeable outer wall. Water enters through the outer surface and flows inward toward the central core. This design is commonly used in carbon block and sediment filters.
Axial cartridges, on the other hand, have a solid impermeable outer wall. Water enters through one end and flows along the entire length of the cartridge before exiting through the opposite end. Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are typical examples of this type.
When to replace a filter Cartridge?
The replacement interval of a filter depends on the quality of the raw water being treated. Higher TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels in the feed water will shorten the filter's service life. The maximum lifespan of a cartridge filter is typically around 5–6 months, based on its dirt-holding capacity. That said, the actual duration a cartridge remains effective also varies with the concentration of contaminants in the water.
There are several indicators that can help determine whether a membrane is still functional or needs replacement. One clear sign is when the RO system stops producing water altogether, or when the flow rate from the membrane becomes noticeably weaker. Another indication is a decline in the quality of the purified water from the RO tap. Even if the system appears to be running, it may no longer be capable of producing permeate water that meets the required standards, signaling that membrane replacement is necessary.
