Water softeners offer a cost-effective and convenient solution to reduce hardness, improve water quality, and enhance the taste of your home's water.

 

Water softeners, also known as ion exchange systems, are a type of water treatment that removes undesirable contaminants by replacing them with a more acceptable substance of the same electrical charge. In the context of hard water, minerals are extracted from the household supply and substituted with a benign material such as salt. When water enters the house, it passes into the softener and flows over small plastic resin beads. These beads are negatively charged and attract positively charged minerals like calcium and magnesium as water moves through the tank. The minerals are exchanged for sodium ions from a salty brine solution stored in the unit. Once the resin becomes saturated with hardness ions, the system automatically regenerates by flushing and recharging the beads.

 

While water softeners are highly effective at contaminant removal, there are several considerations before installation. Homes must have a safe method for disposing of waste brine, as improper disposal may contaminate wells or downstream water bodies. Additionally, the presence of certain particles such as clay or iron bacteria can interfere with the softening process.

 

The process slightly increases the sodium content of household water, which may be a concern for individuals on sodium-restricted diets. Although the increase is generally minimal and safe for most people, those under doctor's orders to avoid salt might consider alternatives. Options include installing an untreated water faucet at the kitchen sink or using potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride in the softener.
