What Is Hard Water?
Hard water contains significant concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. This mineral content accumulates as water percolates through geological formations including limestone deposits, various rock layers, and soil during its natural cycle. The duration of water's subsurface journey directly correlates with its final mineral content-longer transit times result in higher mineral accumulation.
How Does Hard Water Change to Soft Water?
The transformation from hard to soft water requires a mineralization removal process, typically achieved through specialized equipment known as a water softener. During this treatment, hardness ions (calcium and magnesium) are captured by microscopic resin beads through ion exchange technology. These resin beads are pre-loaded with potassium or sodium ions. When hard water passes through the resin bed, an exchange occurs where calcium and magnesium ions are retained by the beads while potassium or sodium ions are released into the water. This substitution process effectively converts hard water into softened water.
