Understand pore size
Understanding filter pore size is fundamental to selecting an effective water filtration system. The pore size refers to the microscopic openings within the filter media that allow water molecules to pass while trapping contaminants. Functioning similarly to kitchen strainers or colanders, these pores determine what substances can penetrate the filtration barrier. Generally, as the pore dimensions decrease, the filter becomes more selective, blocking a wider range of microorganisms and chemical compounds.
For instance, a filter labeled with an absolute pore size of 1 micron guarantees that every single pore in the filtration membrane measures 1 micron or less in diameter. This specification ensures complete removal of all particles larger than 1 micron from the filtered water.
Conversely, filters rated with a nominal or mean pore size of 1 micron indicate that while the average pore diameter is approximately 1 micron, there exists pore size variation - some openings may be smaller while others are larger. Consequently, these filters may permit certain contaminants exceeding 1 micron to pass through the larger pores, making them less precise than absolute-rated filters.

2. Whole-House (Point-of-Entry) Filtration Systems
Also referred to as point-of-entry (POE) systems, these comprehensive solutions treat all water entering your home's plumbing infrastructure. This means every water source in your residence - including showers, laundry connections, and outdoor spigots - receives filtered water. Whole-house systems are particularly advantageous when you need to eliminate hazardous contaminants (such as volatile organic compounds or heavy metals) from all water sources, not just your drinking supply. This ensures protection during bathing, cleaning, and other water uses where skin absorption or inhalation of contaminants may occur.
Important Consideration:
Be aware that whole-house systems designed to remove disinfectants like chlorine may inadvertently create an environment conducive to microbial growth within your plumbing network. The absence of residual disinfectants allows bacteria to potentially colonize pipes and fixtures, necessitating additional maintenance considerations.
