What is de-ionized water from a SPOTBYE Water Systems proprietary system?

Deionization represents the gold standard for laboratory-grade water purification, effectively eliminating dissolved mineral salts present in all natural water sources. This process leverages ion exchange technology to remove charged particles - cation exchange resins substitute hydrogen ions (H+) for metallic cations like sodium and calcium, while anion exchange resins replace sulfates and chlorides with hydroxide ions (OH-). The subsequent combination of these ions produces ultrapure water molecules. Two specialized resin formulations facilitate this process: weak base resins for strong acid removal and strong base resins for comprehensive anion exchange.

 

How does it work?

During the filtration process, calcium and other mineral compounds responsible for water spotting are effectively captured by the resin media, allowing only purified, spot-free water to pass through the system.

 

When do I need to change the resin?

For optimal performance, we advise replacing the deionization filters once the TDS meter detects any measurable impurities (above 0 ppm). Pure deionized water at 0 ppm concentration is scientifically incapable of leaving mineral deposits or surface blemishes. The operational lifespan of these filters varies according to regional water composition, flow rates, and resin degradation - though most users report no visible spotting below 10 ppm, with many systems maintaining spot-free performance up to 20 ppm.

 

Critical operational note: Always conduct preliminary testing on sample surfaces using your local water source at various TDS levels above 0 ppm to establish your system's effective cutoff point - the threshold at which surface polishing becomes necessary to remove residual deposits.

 

Will soft water extend the life of my resin?

Water softened through potassium or sodium ion exchange processes does not enhance resin longevity, as the total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration remains essentially unchanged before and after softening. In scenarios where source water contains elevated TDS levels, such softened water may still pose a risk of surface damage due to persistent mineral content.
