Advantages:
Flow Rate: Due to their less compact granular composition, GAC filters typically deliver faster water flow rates than carbon block filters.
Initial Cost: The relatively straightforward production method often makes these filters more cost-effective for initial purchase.
Contaminant Removal: These filters efficiently eliminate chlorine, unpleasant tastes and odors, along with certain organic compounds.
Disadvantages:
Filtration Efficiency: While GAC filters demonstrate reliable performance for basic filtration needs, their larger carbon granules inherently provide reduced surface area exposure, resulting in comparatively lower efficiency for capturing microscopic contaminants when measured against carbon block alternatives.
Channeling: Prolonged water flow may cause channeling within the carbon bed, where water preferentially erodes pathways through the media. This creates uneven flow distribution, allowing water to bypass active filtration zones and gradually diminishing overall purification effectiveness.
GAC filters tend to be the preferred choice for applications demanding greater water throughput, particularly when the main objectives are chlorine elimination and taste/odor improvement rather than microscopic particle removal.
