Salt serves exclusively as a regenerating agent-its purpose is to flush accumulated hardness minerals to drain and restore the softening capacity of the resin. The actual softening mechanism depends on the resin releasing sodium ions. During regeneration, when salt (sodium chloride) solution flows through the resin bed, the sodium component replenishes the resin's exchange sites while the chloride combines with the captured hardness minerals to facilitate their removal. Crucially, salt is only utilized during this regeneration phase and is thoroughly rinsed from the resin bed in the final cycle stage before the softener resumes normal operation.
